Things You Can Only Do At Camp

As I sit looking over the pictures of Summer 2012, I was struck by how many things you only do at camp. The list is long and full of things that make you laugh and things that make you think. Campers, if I leave anything out, please let me know!

Only at Weequahic…

•             Is racing with a bed in hand a serious sport.

•             MAKING the bed, hands clasped with a ‘sister’ a timed and valued activity.

•             Is Bench ball played, and played well!

•             Does anyone know what BBG means but also knows how to play it!

•             Do you find a Camp Mom without any ‘real’ children as campers at camp

•             Do you play underneath an American flag so old that it has only 48 stars.

•             Are you a part of  Tribe or Team at the end of the session where you add value, regardless of your strengths and challenges

•             Do you spend a Friday night thinking about gratitude, attitude, and courage

•             Can you hear cows mooing every day at 2:55pm

•             Can you launch a rocket, play in the lake, compete in a soccer game, enjoy canteen, and STILL have time to goof off with your friends.

•             Do you get to enjoy Free Play on Main Campus

•             You listen to nominations from staff of campers who have done awesome things that day before lowering the flag

•             Do you sing Taps and Alma Mater while facing the lake, regardless of where you are on camp

•             Are 13-16 year old guys clamoring for a handball team tournament under the lights

•             Where you get to hang out with friends 50 feet off the ground

There are so many wonderful things you get to do only at Weequahic, and the above list is just a start. Campers and staff, let us hear from you about what we are missing from this list.

Camp Weequahic: Preparing Children for a Global Life

The world is shrinking. It’s a line you hear over and over because it’s true. First, steamboats and railroads made it possible to ‘easily’ travel distances once thought unimaginable. Then airlines made it possible to get anywhere within 24 hours. Now, the internet and our smartphones allow us to connect with anyone, anywhere in the world, instantly.

The benefits of this newfound ability to connect immediately will be most fully realized by our young people who are interested in building connections and have some experience in doing so. A summer at Weequahic could hardly be a better place to start.

Children and staff come to Camp Weequahic from twenty eight States and thirteen countries. In fact, our community represented all but one of the continents this summer. (Hopefully, we can find an intrepid penguin to help us round out all seven continents next summer!)

Our campers had the summer of their lives laughing, growing, and learning alongside children with whom they’d never connect and from staff they’d never meet unless at camp. Young people immersed in a wonderfully fun environment are more willing and interested in reaching out to others. In doing so, they begin to build the habits of independence, curiosity, and openness. These are the same skills necessary to be successful in the larger but shrinking world of adults.

If you want your child to learn to connect with others, you’d be hard pressed to find a safer, more inviting place than Camp Weequahic. Our diverse and professional staff help prepare our campers for the larger world in so many fun and exciting ways. Whether through arts, athletics, aquatics or adventure or simply sitting around the campfire, we’ve something for all to enjoy.

Dance at Camp Weequahic

Dance has become such a popular activity that campers are increasingly seeking dance camp experiences.  Some Weequahic campers are serious dancers while others just want to take the opportunity during the summer to improve their skills.  Camp Weequahic’s dance team also competes in Wayne County dance camp competitions.  Most children say that it’s easier to try something that might be difficult when they’re in a place where they feel like they can be themselves, and many like to explore dance during summer camp because they find the fun, accepting environment easier to endure the bumps that inevitably come with learning new things.

Not every camper who enjoys Dance at Camp Weequahic is an aspiring dancing star, however  Many venture into dance for the first time because they’re curious to learn the latest moves, and their enthusiasm grows when they find those moves come in handy during camp shows and special activities.

Dance is popular because it’s a fun activity that everyone can enjoy.   All choice camps like Camp Weequahic give campers an opportunity to make almost their entire camp experience a dance one or to just learn a few new steps and tricks here and there.
